Scottish Human Rights Commission deeply concerned by recent violence on the streets in Scotland

The Scottish Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by recent events including violence against Muslims on the streets of Scotland. Human rights are for everyone. No one should be at risk of harm because of their religion or the colour of their skin.

Everyone in Scotland has the right to freedom of religion, and to live our lives without fear of violence. These rights are set down in the Human Rights Act.

The SHRC also acknowledges the important contribution of Scotland’s human rights defenders, who support their local communities to protect human rights and keep everyone safe.

Scottish public authorities are bound by the Human Rights Act and other international and domestic law to promote, protect and uphold human rights for everyone in Scotland. They have an obligation to prevent and act upon incidences of racial abuse and intimidation.
