The Scottish Human Rights Commission has welcomed the human rights concerns raised in the Scottish Parliament Justice Committee’s Stage 1 report on the Prisoners (Control of Release) (Scotland) Bill.
Professor Alan Miller, Chair of the Commission, said:
“We are pleased to see the Committee has listened to the Commission’s evidence and echoed our concerns about the need for adequate prison rehabilitation programmes should the Bill progress.
“The Bill, as it stands, is likely to have the effect
when it’s used within the legal framework and with the powers that the public, through Parliament, has given the Police. The problem with consensual stop and search is that the public, through Parliament... in Parliament rather than just an agreement?

The Scottish Human Rights Commission has welcomed the inclusion of a National Outcome on Human Rights within the draft National Outcomes and Indicators developed by the Scottish Government.
In a letter to the Scottish Parliament's Equality and Human Rights Committee, the Commission highlights the importance of having a specific National Outcome on human rights and welcomes the draft Outcome, which states "We respect, protect and fulfil human rights and live free from discrimination".
