The SHRC also has the power to intervene in legal proceedings. Interventions are a way of raising particular points of law or fact which do not feature in the arguments advanced by the parties to the proceedings, but which would assist the court in its determination of the law. The SHRC has a specific intervention power under the UNCRC Act, as well as a wider intervention power in respect of other human rights.

These case studies show how different organisations have put a human rights based approach into practice in their work. They were produced by the Commission with support from various partners, as part of Scotland's National Action Plan for Human Rights.

Our State of the Nation reports aim to support the Scottish Parliament and other public bodies to understand and meet their obligations under human rightslaw. At the national level, monitoring is essential to progress recommendations, decisions and judgments from accountability bodies that need to be addressed by the Scottish Government, Parliament and other public sector bodies.
We hope that these reports will also be useful to civil society, human rights defenders and rights holders
awareness of human rights issues in these areas with decision-makers and to highlight the need for a geographically-specific approach to Scottish law and policy.
