Fact-finding visit
An essential part of this project was for the Commission to go to the Highlands and Islands and to hear first-hand from humanrights defenders on the ground about the issues facing their communities.
In late 2023, Project Lead Dr Luis F Yanes and various members of the Commission team undertook a six week fact-finding trip to the Highlands and Islands, visiting more than twenty towns across six local authorities and meeting with 146 people, including:

How do we decide on which issues to spotlight?
The Commission is a small public body with a broad remit and strong ambition, so we must decide carefully how to prioritise our limited resources to secure a positive impact on humanrights in Scotland.
The current projects were chosen using a rigorous... Spotlight Projects which will be based on the priority areas identified in our 2024-28 Strategic Plan, which was informed by consultations with rights holders, civil society and key stakeholders.
