Issue 38 August 2007 - Introduction from the Editor
The imminent establishment of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights ("CEHR") bringing together the EOC, CRE and ORC and extending the remit to include human rights is a significant milestone in the development of human rights in Britain.
Kavita Chetty provides us with an insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the CEHR, particularly the relationship between human rights and equality.
In our next Issue we plan to focus on Scotland in relation to the imminent establishment of the Scottish Commission for Human Rights (SCHR") and will be exploring its challenges and opportunities, including its relationship with the CEHR.
We also update you with the ongoing issue of private care homes and the interpretation of "public authority" and report on the recent House of Lords ruling. It may be anticipated that this is a topic which will be examined by both the CEHR and the SCHR.
Scott continues to offer an update on significant cases from the European Court of Human Rights as well as prepares us for an important House of Lords decision pending in the case of Somerville v Scottish Ministers.
As ever we would welcome your comments and ideas as to future content and hope you enjoy this read.
