New Member of the Commission announced

Date: 30 June 2010
It was announced today to the Scottish Parliament that Matt Smith OBE has been appointed to the Scottish Human Rights Commission as a part-time Member. Mr Smith
is the Scottish Secretary of UNISON and a former President of the STUC.

Mr Smith will take up the position on 1 September 2010. Part-time Members work an average of 30 days per year.

The full membership of the Scottish Human Rights Commission will be: Professor Alan Miller, Chair, Professor Kay Hampton, part-time Member, Shelagh McCall, part-time Member, and Matt Smith, part-time Member.

Mr Smith is also a member of the Employment Appeals Tribunal and an Executive member and Honorary Fellow of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry.  He sits as a Justice of the Peace in North Ayrshire and is a Justice of the Peace Advisory Committee member for North Strathclyde.  He was appointed earlier this year to the Standards Commission for Scotland.

Professor Alan Miller said: "Matt is a very welcome appointment to the Commission. He has been a leading voice in the trade union movement for many years, and brings valuable expertise in relation to the public sector and insight into areas of our work such as Business and Human Rights.

“Along with Shelagh McCall and Professor Kay Hampton, the other Members of the Commission, I warmly welcome Matt to the post.”
