Commission welcomes Equal Protection Bill

The Scottish Human Rights Commission has today welcomed the publication of theĀ Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill, a Members Bill which would remove the defence of 'justifiable assault' in relation to physical punishment of children.

Judith Robertson, Chair of the Commission, said:

"This Bill is a welcome opportunity to make progress on this important human rights issue for children in Scotland. The Commission has been reporting this to the United Nations for many years, so we hope to see the Bill pass into law."
