International
The Scottish Human Rights Commission is one of around 80 human rights Commissions around the world. We and our colleagues in other countries are known as national human rights institutions (NHRI’s).
Human rights are truly international.
Everyone, in every country in the world, has the same basic rights and freedoms no matter what their gender, race, language, religion, national origin, age or disability. Human rights are protected by a series of international laws and treaties which are incorporated into our national laws in Scotland.

In this section of the website you can find out more about our role as a national human rights institution, the other Commissions around the world, and about international law and the different treaties which protect human rights. There is also information about international bodies including the United Nations which have a global role in protecting human rights.
